“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land—it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one—it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.”
(Qur’an 5:32)
Ahmed Al-Ahmed tackles and disarms one of the Bondi Beach gunmen
In the wake of the horrific terror attack at Bondi Beach that claimed at least 15 innocent lives during a Hanukkah celebration, one man’s extraordinary courage stands as a powerful testament to the true teachings of Islam. Ahmed Al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian-Australian father of two and fruit seller, risked his own life to disarm one of the gunmen, preventing what could have been an even greater tragedy. While having coffee nearby, Ahmed heard gunshots and saw people falling to the ground. Without hesitation, he ran toward the danger, tackled the armed attacker, wrestled the rifle from his hands, and pointed it back at him until the terrorist retreated. Ahmed was subsequently shot twice by the second gunman but survived. His actions saved countless lives, and he has been rightfully hailed as a hero by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, U.S. President Donald Trump, and people around the world. A GoFundMe campaign established in his honor has raised over $1,500,000 in support of his recovery.
We unequivocally condemn this senseless act of violence and the taking of innocent lives. The perpetrators of this attack—a father and son who opened fire on people celebrating a religious holiday—do not represent Islam or its teachings in any way. Islam is clear and absolute in its prohibition of killing innocent people. Ahmed Al-Ahmed, a Muslim man, embodied this sacred principle when he risked everything to save his Jewish neighbors celebrating Hanukkah. His heroism reminds the world that Islam teaches protection of the innocent, courage in the face of evil, and the sanctity of all human life regardless of faith. While cowards hiding behind distorted interpretations of religion perpetrate violence, true Muslims like Ahmed run toward danger to defend the defenseless. He is a real-life hero whose actions reflect the authentic values of Islam—values of mercy, justice, bravery, and the preservation of life.
