Maintaining the Islamic Center: A Sacred Responsibility
The Islamic Center in Stillwater stands as more than just a building in our community; it is a house of worship, a place of learning, and a sanctuary where believers gather to strengthen their faith and connection with Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala. Yet, as we walk through its halls and gather in its prayer spaces, we cannot help but notice the visible signs of time taking its toll. Aging fixtures, walls showing their years, and facilities that have served us faithfully but now need attention and care. Among the most in need of care are the outside surroundings of the building. Yet, inside, a lot is required.
These are not mere aesthetic concerns. The condition of our Islamic Center reflects our commitment to our faith and our respect for the sacred spaces where we worship. When we allow the house of Allah to fall into disrepair, we send a message, not just to our community, but to ourselves and to our Creator, about what we truly value.
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught us that excellence is not optional in our faith; it is a fundamental expectation. He said: “Indeed, Allah loves that when any of you does something, he does it perfectly.” This hadith speaks directly to our responsibility as caretakers of the Islamic Center. Whether we are maintaining the building, organizing programs, or simply ensuring cleanliness, we are called to pursue excellence in all that we do.

When we neglect the maintenance of our Islamic Center, allowing deterioration to advance unchecked, we fall short of this prophetic standard. The fraying edges, the outdated facilities, these are not just signs of physical aging, but reflections of our collective negligence in fulfilling a sacred trust.
Allah reminds us in the Quran: “And say, ‘Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers.’” (Quran 9:105). This verse establishes a profound reality: every action we take, or fail to take, is witnessed by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala, His Messenger, and the community of believers. Our stewardship of the Islamic Center is no exception.
For those entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining our Center, this is a matter between them and their Lord. The locks that need fixing, the ceiling tiles that need replacing, the facilities that require updating, the mold that must be removed; these are not simply administrative tasks to be deferred indefinitely. They are trust obligations, amanah, that will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment.
Moreover, deferred maintenance inevitably becomes more expensive. A small repair ignored today becomes a major renovation tomorrow. The cost of prevention is always less than the cost of restoration. By postponing necessary repairs and upgrades, we are not being fiscally responsible; we are being financially reckless with community resources.

A Call to Action
The solution requires commitment. Those responsible for management must prioritize maintenance as a core responsibility, not an afterthought. Budgets must reflect the reality that buildings require ongoing care and periodic updates. Regular inspections should identify issues before they become crises. Rainwater has leaked multiple times near electrical outlets, a serious safety hazard, along with leaks in various other areas. The multipurpose kitchen alone tells a sobering story of neglect.
And Allah knows best.
