The Dream That Changed Everything

How a Vision of the Prophet ﷺ Guided a Soul to Islam

Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated a remarkable story that demonstrates how Allah’s guidance can reach a person through the most unexpected means — even in dreams — and how a single act of kindness can open the gates of Paradise.

🌙 The Three Dreams

A Muslim man fell asleep one night and saw the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in his dream. The Prophet told him: “Go to the Zoroastrian man in Baghdad and tell him: Your supplication has been answered.”

When he woke up, the man was confused. “How can I go to a Zoroastrian?” he thought. “What business do I have with him?”

But the dream came again the second night. The Prophet ﷺ repeated the same message. And when it came a third time on the third night, the man realized this was no ordinary dream. This was divine instruction.

So he traveled to Baghdad and sought out the Zoroastrian.

A Man of Wealth and Worldly Success

When the Muslim arrived at the Zoroastrian’s residence, he found a man living in extensive comfort and worldly prosperity. The house was grand, the servants many, and the wealth evident.

He entered, greeted the man, and sat down.

The Zoroastrian: “Do you have a need?”

The Muslim: “Yes.”

The Zoroastrian: “Speak.”

The Muslim: “In private, please.”

The Zoroastrian dismissed the people around him. But his close companions remained.

The Muslim: “And these as well.”

So the Zoroastrian sent them all away. Now they were alone.

The Zoroastrian: “Speak.”

The Message Delivered

The Muslim took a deep breath and said:

“I am a messenger from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to you. And he says to you: Your supplication has been answered.”

The Zoroastrian was stunned. He looked at the visitor carefully.

The Zoroastrian: “Do you know who I am?”

The Muslim: “Yes.”

The Zoroastrian: “Then you know that I deny Islam and I deny the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ!”

The Muslim remained calm.

The Muslim: “That is exactly what I said. And yet he sent me to you.”

Silence filled the room. The Zoroastrian’s heart trembled. He asked again, as if seeking confirmation:

The Zoroastrian: “He sent you to me?”

The Muslim: “Yes.”

At that moment, something broke open in the Zoroastrian’s heart. Tears filled his eyes. He raised his finger and declared:

“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

The Ripple Effect of Faith

The man who had just been a Zoroastrian moments ago immediately called for his companions and employees. They gathered around him, confused and anxious.

He announced:

The New Muslim: “I was in misguidance, but I have now returned to the truth. Whoever among you accepts Islam, what is in his hands from my wealth is his to keep. And whoever does not accept Islam, let him remove himself from what belongs to me.”

All of them accepted Islam except a few.

Then he called his son.

The Father: “My son, I was in misguidance, and I have now accepted Islam. What will you do?”

The Son: “O my father, I will accept Islam.”

And the son became Muslim.

Then he called his daughter — who had been married to his son (a custom in some cultures of that time).

The Father: “My daughter, I have accepted Islam, and your brother has accepted Islam. If you accept Islam, I will separate you from him (since the marriage would no longer be valid under Islamic law).”

The Daughter: “O my father, by Allah, I was already disliking being married to him. I accept Islam.”

And so the entire family entered Islam in a single day.

The Supplication That Was Answered

After all this, the new Muslim turned to his visitor with a question:

The New Muslim: “Do you know which supplication was answered?”

The Muslim visitor shook his head. “No.”

And so the man began to tell the story:

🍽️ The Feast and the Hungry Neighbors

“When I married my daughter to my son, I prepared a great feast and invited everyone. People came from all over, drawn by the wealth Allah had given me. After they had eaten and left, I was exhausted, so I told my servant to spread a mat for me on the upper floor of the house so I could rest.

As I lay there, I heard voices from the neighboring house. They were a noble family, but poor. I heard a little girl crying to her mother:

The Little Girl: ‘O Mother, this Zoroastrian has hurt us with the smell of his food!’

My heart broke. I immediately went down and gathered a large amount of food, many gold coins, and clothing for everyone in that household. I sent it all to them.

One of the women in that house said: ‘May Allah gather you with my grandfather (meaning the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ).’

And the rest of them said: ‘Ameen.’

That supplication — that was the one that was answered.

Lessons from This Beautiful Story

💎 1. Sincere Kindness Opens Hearts

This man was not a Muslim when he showed compassion to his hungry neighbors. Yet his act of generosity — done purely out of human decency — became the key that unlocked his salvation. Allah sees every act of goodness, regardless of who performs it.

🤲 2. The Power of Sincere Du’a

A simple woman made a heartfelt supplication: “May Allah gather you with my grandfather (the Prophet).” She didn’t know her prayer would be answered so powerfully. Never underestimate the du’a of the sincere, the poor, or the oppressed.

🌙 3. Dreams Can Carry Divine Messages

When the same dream comes three times, it demands attention. The Prophet ﷺ can appear in dreams as a form of guidance, comfort, or instruction. True dreams are one of the forty-six parts of prophethood.

✨ 4. Allah’s Mercy Reaches Everyone

This Zoroastrian lived in denial of Islam, yet Allah sent him a message through the Prophet ﷺ himself. Allah’s mercy extends to all His creation, and He guides whom He wills through means we could never imagine.

👨‍👩‍👧 5. Faith Transforms Families

When the head of the household accepted Islam, his entire family followed. Leadership by example is the most powerful form of da’wah. Children and loved ones watch how we live, not just what we say.

The Prophet ﷺ Said:

حَيْثُمَا كُنْتُمْ فَصَلُّوا عَلَيَّ، فَإِنَّ صَلَاتَكُمْ تَبْلُغُنِي

“Wherever you are, send blessings upon me, for indeed your blessings reach me.”

Never underestimate the power of a single act of kindness. You never know which good deed will be the one that changes your eternal destiny.

May Allah guide us all to sincerity in our actions and acceptance of our supplications. Ameen. 🤲
