The Northeast is bracing for extraordinarily cold temperatures just before Christmas, according to climatologist Judah Cohen’s latest forecast. Starting in the third week of December, a significant Arctic blast will send temperatures plummeting 15 to 20 degrees below normal across the Midwest and East Coast.
Cities accustomed to milder winter weather will feel the dramatic shift. New York, which typically sees highs in the mid-30s during December, could experience temperatures dropping into the low 20s or even the teens. Some areas, like Albany, are already enduring temperatures 15 to 20 degrees colder than usual for early December.
This extreme cold is being driven by a southward dip in the polar vortex, funneling Arctic air deep into the United States. The East Coast is expected to bear the brunt of the chill, with the cold being both intense and widespread across the region.
Adding to the wintry conditions, the Northeast faces its first significant winter storm of the season. Parts of New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont could see up to 12 inches of snow. Meanwhile, major cities like New York and Boston will likely experience a wintry mix that transitions to rain as the storm system pushes through by midweek, limiting their snow accumulation.
As this early-season cold snap unfolds, the question on everyone’s mind is whether this Arctic outbreak signals a snowy winter ahead or is simply a preview of more cold to come later in the month. Stay tuned for updates as conditions develop.
