Al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl was renowned for his deep knowledge of both the Quran and the wisdom traditions of the Arabs and Persians. When challenged to prove that all human wisdom originates in the Divine Book, he responded with such brilliance that his answers have been preserved for over a thousand years.

They said to Al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl: “You claim to extract the proverbs of the Arabs and Persians from the Quran. Can you truly find everything there?”

What followed was not an academic exercise—it was a masterclass in how divine revelation encompasses all human wisdom. Challenge after challenge was thrown at him, and verse after verse, he demonstrated that the Quran had already articulated these truths with greater eloquence and depth.

Twelve Proverbs, Twelve Quranic Proofs

1
“Can you find in the Quran: The best of matters is the middle course?”
“Yes, in four places!”
The Virtue of Moderation
1)
“Neither old nor virgin, but in between” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:68)
2)
“Those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly, but are in between, moderate” — Surah Al-Furqan (25:67)
3)
“Do not make your hand chained to your neck, nor extend it completely” — Surah Al-Isra (17:29)
4)
“Do not recite your prayer too loudly or too quietly, but seek a way in between” — Surah Al-Isra (17:110)
2
“Can you find: Whoever is ignorant of something becomes its enemy?”
“Yes, in two places!”
Ignorance Breeds Hostility
1)
“Rather, they denied that which they did not comprehend in knowledge” — Surah Yunus (10:39)
2)
“And when they are not guided by it, they will say, ‘This is an ancient falsehood'” — Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:11)
3
“Can you find: Beware the evil of one you have done good to?”
“Yes!”
Ingratitude After Favor
“They resented nothing except that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them from His bounty” — Surah At-Tawbah (9:74)
4
“Can you find: Hearing is not like seeing?”
“Yes!”
Direct Experience Surpasses Report
“Do you not believe? He said: Yes, but [I ask] so that my heart may be reassured” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:260)

Even Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him, sought to see with his own eyes—not because he doubted, but because witnessing brings a deeper level of certainty than hearing alone.

5
“Can you find: In movement there is blessing?”
“Yes!”
Striving Brings Provision
“Whoever emigrates in the way of Allah will find on earth many refuges and abundance” — Surah An-Nisa (4:100)
6

8
“Can you find: A believer is not stung from the same hole twice?”
“Yes!”
Learning from Experience
“Should I trust you with him except as I trusted you with his brother before?” — Surah Yusuf (12:64)

Prophet Yaqub (Jacob) reminded his sons: I trusted you once with Yusuf (Joseph) and you betrayed that trust. Why would I make the same mistake twice?

9
“Can you find: Whoever aids a wrongdoer will be empowered over by him?”
“Yes!”
The Fate of Those Who Enable Evil
“It is decreed that whoever takes him as an ally, he will mislead him and guide him to the punishment of the Blaze” — Surah Al-Hajj (22:4)
10
“Can you find: A snake does not give birth except to a snake?”
“Yes!”

“And among you are those who listen for them (spies/informants)” — Surah At-Tawbah (9:47)
12
“Can you find: Lawful provision comes in measured amounts, but unlawful wealth comes in abundance?”
“Yes!”
The Test of Lawful vs. Unlawful
“When their fish would come to them openly on their Sabbath day, and on the day they had no Sabbath the fish would not come to them” — Surah Al-A’raf (7:163)

The people were tested: abundant fish appeared on the day when fishing was forbidden (Sabbath), and scarce on the days when it was lawful. This is how Allah tests us—making the unlawful appear abundant and easy, while the lawful requires patience and effort.

Why This Matters

Al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl didn’t just demonstrate his knowledge—he revealed a profound truth: every piece of human wisdom, every proverb that captures a truth about life, has its origin in divine revelation.

The Arabs had their sayings. The Persians had theirs. Every civilization accumulated wisdom through centuries of experience. But the Quran, revealed in just 23 years, contained all of it—and expressed it with greater eloquence, deeper meaning, and clearer guidance.

This is not coincidence. This is proof that the Quran is exactly what it claims to be: the speech of the One who created human nature, who knows how societies function, who understands the patterns of history, and who articulated timeless truths that would resonate across all cultures and all ages.

The Lesson for Us

When we read the Quran, we often approach it seeking answers to religious questions: How do I pray? What is halal? What happens after death?

But Al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl reminds us that the Quran is far more comprehensive than that. It is a complete guide to human existence—addressing psychology, sociology, ethics, economics, politics, and every dimension of life.

Every proverb that captures a truth. Every maxim that distills wisdom. Every saying that guides conduct. The Quran has already articulated it—usually with greater depth and precision than the proverb itself.

This should fill us with awe and humility. We hold in our hands a book that contains all human wisdom. The question is: Are we reading it with the depth it deserves? Are we extracting its treasures? Or are we content with surface-level engagement while its depths remain unexplored?

The scholars of the past found entire libraries in a single verse.
What will we find when we truly begin to read?
