Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’
The $1 Billion Buy-In for a Permanent Seat
Members of President Donald Trump’s newly formed “Board of Peace,” the committee tasked with overseeing the reconstruction of Gaza, will receive a permanent seat if they contribute **$1 billion**, according to a US official. This controversial financial requirement has been a central point of discussion since the board’s formation.
The official clarified that all funds raised will be directed toward rebuilding Gaza, emphasizing that the structure is designed to avoid the pitfalls of other international aid organizations: “there will not be exorbitant salaries and massive administrative bloat that plagues many other international organizations.”
While contributing funds is not mandatory for membership, those who do not make the $1 billion payment will be limited to a **three-year term** on the board.
Composition of the “Greatest and Most Prestigious Board”
The Trump-chaired board features a mix of high-profile political figures and influential business leaders. Trump has touted the group as “the Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled.”
| Member | Role/Affiliation |
|---|---|
| Donald Trump | President (Board Chair) |
| Tony Blair | Former British Prime Minister |
| Mark Carney | Canadian Prime Minister |
| Marco Rubio | US Secretary of State |
| Steve Witkoff | Trump’s Foreign Policy Envoy |
| Robert Gabriel | Deputy National Security Adviser |
| Jared Kushner | Son-in-law and Adviser |
| Marc Rowan | Billionaire Businessman |
| Ajay Banga | World Bank Head |
The panel is a key step in the United Nations-backed American plan to demilitarize and rebuild Gaza, which was ravaged by two years of war between Israel and Hamas. Members will each be given a defined portfolio “critical to Gaza’s stabilization and long-term success,” the White House said.
Exclusion and Opposition
The board’s formation has immediately drawn criticism, particularly from Israeli leadership.
Israel has repeatedly tried to prevent Qatar and Turkey from having any role in the future of Gaza, accusing them of supporting and funding Hamas. Furthermore, the board has **no representative of the Palestinian Authority**, the Hamas rival that runs parts of the occupied West Bank and is expected to eventually be handed control of Gaza after completing extensive reforms.
Governance Structure
Under the US plan, the day-to-day governance of Gaza will be handled by a **Palestinian technocratic committee**. A separate **“Gaza executive board”** that will support governance includes officials from Turkey, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and some members of the “Board of Peace” and the technocratic committee.
