Imam Shafii on the Nature of Knowledge

Imam Shafii said:
“Knowledge is slow to be acquired; its attainment is distant. It cannot be attained by arrows, nor seen in dreams, nor inherited from fathers and uncles. Rather, it is a tree that only grows through planting, and it is only planted in the soul. It is only watered through study, and it is only attained by those who spend their eyes and kneel on their knees.”
