The Story of Safanah bint Hatim: Mercy and Nobility
How the Prophet’s ﷺ Compassion Transformed a Tribe and Demonstrated True Islamic Character
Introduction: A Lesson in Mercy and Nobility
When the captives of Banu Tayi’ were brought to Madinah and presented before the Prophet ﷺ, among them was Safanah bint Hatim al-Ta’i. She was a woman of remarkable beauty and eloquence – tall and well-proportioned (عيطاء), with beautiful lips and teeth (لعساء), and wide, expressive eyes (عيناء).
This story demonstrates how the Prophet’s ﷺ mercy and noble character could transform even the most difficult situations into opportunities for guidance and faith.
The Encounter with the Prophet ﷺ
When Safanah spoke, her eloquence and wisdom made the people forget her beauty. She said to the Prophet ﷺ:
“O Muhammad, my father has perished and my protector is absent. If you see fit to release me and not let the Arab tribes gloat over me, for I am the daughter of my people’s leader. My father loved noble character – he fed the hungry, freed the distressed, clothed the naked, and never turned away anyone who came to him in need without honoring and respecting them.”
The Prophet ﷺ asked her: “Who is your father and who is your protector?”
She replied: “My father is Hatim ibn Abdullah al-Ta’i, and my protector is my brother Adi ibn Hatim.”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “You are the daughter of Hatim al-Ta’i?” She said: “Yes.”
The Prophet’s ﷺ Noble Response
The Prophet ﷺ said to his companions:
“O Safanah, these qualities you mentioned are indeed the qualities of believers.” Then he said to his companions: “Release her as an honor to her father, for he loved noble character!”
Safanah then asked:
“What about me and those with me from my people among the captives?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Release those with her as an honor to her and her father.”
The Prophet’s ﷺ decision to release the captives based on their father’s noble character demonstrates how Islam honors and preserves noble qualities, even in former enemies.
Safanah’s Conversion to Islam
When Safanah witnessed this noble character that could only come from a great heart filled with mercy and responsibility, she declared:
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
All the remaining captives from her people also accepted Islam. The Prophet ﷺ returned to Safanah all that the Muslims had taken from Banu Tayi’.
When they prepared to leave, Safanah said: “O Messenger of Allah, the rest of our men and families have gone up to the mountain tops out of fear of the Muslims. Would you send someone with us to give them security until they come down and accept Islam at your hands, for that would be an honor?”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“I will send with you a man from my household whose call is like my call, who will carry my guarantee of security to them.”
She asked: “Who is he, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Ali ibn Abi Talib.”
The Mission of Imam Ali (رضي الله عنه)
The Prophet ﷺ ordered that a cushioned litter be prepared for Safanah to ride in with honor and respect. She traveled with the captives from her people, and Imam Ali (رضي الله عنه) was with them until they reached the homes of Banu Tayi’ at Jabal Aja.
Imam Ali (رضي الله عنه) proclaimed the Prophet’s ﷺ guarantee of security in a loud voice until everyone in the mountain heard. The men of Tayi’ and their warriors came down from the mountain in groups and individually to the valley.
When they saw their women, children, and possessions returned to them, they all wept and gathered around Imam Ali (رضي الله عنه), repeating the declaration of faith. Before that day ended, every tribe of Banu Tayi’ had entered Islam.
Adi ibn Hatim’s Conversion
Safanah sent a message to her brother Adi informing him of the Prophet’s ﷺ pardon, generosity, and noble character. She urged him to come to Madinah, meet the noble Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, apologize to him, and enter Islam.
Adi prepared immediately and headed for Madinah. He entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam at his noble hands. He returned to his people honored and respected, and became one of the best Muslims.
This story demonstrates how true Islamic character – mercy, justice, and noble conduct – can transform even the most difficult hearts and bring entire communities to faith.
