On this day, the 17th of June 1998, the Islamic world lost one of its most beloved scholars, Sheikh Muhammad Metwally Al-Sha’rawi – may Allah have mercy on him – at the age of 87. After a unique life of scholarly and da’wah contributions, he left behind an eternal legacy in the hearts of Muslims worldwide.

Early Life and Education

Sheikh Al-Sha’rawi was born on April 15, 1911, in the village of Daqadous, Mit Ghamr, Dakahlia Governorate. He grew up in a noble household filled with love for knowledge and the Quran. By the age of eleven, he had memorized the entire Quran. He then joined Al-Azhar institutes, graduating from the Faculty of Arabic Language in Cairo in 1941, and obtained his global teaching certification in 1943.

A Distinguished Career in Service of Islam

Sheikh Al-Sha’rawi began his scholarly journey as a teacher at Al-Azhar institutes in Tanta, Zagazig, and Alexandria. He then moved to Saudi Arabia as part of the Al-Azhar mission, teaching Sharia at Umm Al-Qura University in Mecca. Upon returning to Egypt, he held several prestigious scientific and da’wah positions, including Director of the Office of the Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Head of the Al-Azhar Mission in Algeria, Director of Endowments in Gharbiya, and Deputy of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.

In 1976, he assumed the position of Minister of Endowments and Al-Azhar Affairs, where he contributed to the development of endowment work and the promotion of Islam’s message. After that, he dedicated himself to research, interpretation, and da’wah, creating a unique phase in simplifying the sciences of the Quran and making them accessible to the hearts and ears of all.

Character and Contributions

Sheikh Al-Sha’rawi was known for his intellectual moderation, depth of scientific presentation, and exceptional ability to combine the authenticity of heritage with the developments of the modern era. He was also recognized for his patriotic stances and tireless efforts in correcting concepts and building rational awareness.

Sheikh Al-Sha’rawi received many prestigious awards and honors in recognition of his da’wah and scholarly journey, including the Order of Merit, the Order of the Republic, the Preacher’s Day Award, and an honorary doctorate. Local and international entities celebrated him for his outstanding contributions to spreading Islamic thought.

Notable Works

Sheikh Al-Sha’rawi left behind a valuable scientific and da’wah legacy, including many important works such as: “Al-Sha’rawi’s Tafsir” (Quranic exegesis), “Al-Qada’ wa Al-Qadar” (Divine Decree), “Qasas Al-Anbiya'” (Stories of the Prophets), “Mu’jizat Al-Quran” (The Miracles of the Quran), “Al-Mar’ah fi Al-Quran Al-Karim” (Women in the Noble Quran), “Al-Isra’ wa Al-Mi’raj” (The Night Journey and Ascension), and “Al-Halal wa Al-Haram” (The Lawful and the Prohibited).

Sheikh Muhammad Metwally Al-Sha’rawi is considered one of the most prominent figures who presented Islamic thoughts about the Quran in our modern era. He delivered these thoughts to his audience in a sweet, simple language that moved hearts and deepened his place in the souls of millions of his lovers and followers.

A Lasting Legacy

The Egyptian Radio Library maintains a rich collection of his recorded thoughts, immortalized by his unique voice. These are broadcast daily on the waves of Quran Radio from Cairo, maintaining the continuous spiritual connection between listeners and Imam Al-Da’wah, and commemorating the anniversary of his passing, which falls on this day.

May Allah have mercy on Sheikh Muhammad Metwally Al-Sha’rawi with His vast mercy, and reward him the best of rewards for what he gave to Islam and Muslims. May He gather him with the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous in the gardens of Paradise.
