A Glimpse into the Life and Character of the Lion of Allah
Muhammad ibn al-Sa’ib al-Kalbi narrated that Dhirar ibn Damrah al-Kinani entered the presence of Muawiyah and was asked to describe Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). Dhirar initially hesitated, but Muawiyah insisted. What followed was a profound and moving description of Ali, capturing his wisdom, justice, and piety.
Dhirar ibn Damrah said: “If I must describe him, then by Allah, Ali was far-reaching in vision, strong in power, spoke with clarity, and judged with justice. Knowledge flowed from his sides, and wisdom emanated from his presence. He was detached from the world and its allure, finding solace in the night and its darkness. By Allah, he was full of contemplation and deep thought, often turning his hand and speaking to himself. He preferred coarse food and simple clothing.”
“When we visited him, he would take our hands and answer our questions. Despite his closeness to us, we could not speak to him freely out of reverence, nor could we initiate conversation due to his grandeur in our hearts. When he smiled, it was like a string of pearls. He honored the pious and loved the poor. The strong could not hope for injustice from him, and the weak never despaired of his justice.”
“I bear witness by Allah that I saw him one night, the darkness had spread, and the stars had set. He was in his place of worship, holding his beard, tossing and turning like one afflicted, weeping like one grieved. I could almost hear him now saying: ‘O our Lord, O our Lord!’ pleading to Him, then saying to the world: ‘Are you presenting yourself to me or longing for me? Far be it! Far be it! Seek someone else, for I have renounced you three times. Your life is short, your living is mean, and your steps are few. Alas for the scarcity of provisions and the length of the journey, and the loneliness of the path.'”
“Muawiyah’s tears flowed down his beard, unable to control them, and he wiped them with his sleeve. The people were choked with weeping. Muawiyah said: ‘Such was Abu al-Hasan (Ali), may Allah have mercy on him. How did you find him, O Dhirar?’ Dhirar replied: ‘I found him like a mother camel whose young one has died in her lap, her tears never cease, and her fear never subsides.'”
