The Essence of Scrupulousness
A Lesson from the House of Bishr al-Hafi and Imam Ahmad
A woman came to Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) and said:
“O Abu Abdullah, I am a woman who spins yarn from wool, cotton, and linen by the light of a lamp. Sometimes, the night guards pass by me carrying the Sultan’s torches. Is it permissible for me to spin by the light of their fire?”
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal wept and asked her: “Who are you?” She replied: “I am the sister of Bishr al-Hafi.” He said to her: “From your house emerges true scrupulousness (Wara’). Do not spin by their light.”
Imam Ahmad wept because of the extreme precision of this question and this woman’s fear of falling into even a suspicion of what is forbidden (haram).
The Three Levels of Wara’ (Scrupulousness)
- Level One: Avoiding what is strictly forbidden (Haram).
- Level Two: Avoiding doubtful matters (Shubuhat).
- Level Three: Forsaking some permissible things for fear of falling into the doubtful.
What faith they carried, and what a state of negligence we live in today. O Allah, grant us hearts that rise in rank with every beat.
