How to Prepare for Ramadan — Part (1)
The Month of Quran, Learning, and Righteous Deeds
In just a few days, the blessed month of Ramadan will be upon us—a month that holds a special place among all months. It is a time when the importance of worship and drawing closer to Allah through obligatory and voluntary acts becomes paramount. It is the month of learning the Noble Quran, increasing good deeds, and helping people, especially those in need.
But first, you must understand how to properly prepare for it and how to benefit from it. Ramadan is the season of goodness and blessings. It comes to us with the breeze of mercy and forgiveness, bringing glad tidings of the opportunity for freedom from the Fire, and also an opportunity to renew our covenant before Allah.
Why is Ramadan Called the Month of Quran?
The reason is that the blessed month coincided with the time of al-Ramda when the heat intensifies in the Arabian Peninsula. Ibn Duraid al-Basri said that the naming of the months came from the ancient language, and they named each month according to the season or circumstances it was passing through.
The month of Ramadan coincided with a period of intense heat. It is said that fasting was prescribed during the hottest days of summer. Since fasting has been a known form of worship since ancient times, perhaps Ramadan was named in reference to people enduring hunger and heat during it.
“The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185)
Physical and Spiritual Preparation for Ramadan
You must prepare spiritually for Ramadan through sincere repentance, returning to Allah, forgiving others, leaving sins behind, and determining to fill the month with acts of worship and seizing every moment in it. You must earnestly supplicate to Allah to reach Ramadan and be granted success in its worship.
“There has come to you the month of Ramadan, a blessed month. Allah has made fasting during it obligatory upon you. During it, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed, and the devils are chained. In it there is a night that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its goodness is truly deprived.”
— Narrated by Ahmad and al-Nasa’i
This hadith reminds us of the greatness of the month and the opportunity to draw closer to Allah. As Imam al-Nawawi advised us, we should express our gratitude to Allah through prostration or remembrance when blessings are renewed.
When Does Real Preparation for Ramadan Begin?
Prepare for Ramadan with sincere repentance, starting by returning to Allah and leaving sins and transgressions behind. You must persist in supplicating that Allah allows you to reach Ramadan and grants you success in its acts of worship.
Acquiring knowledge: Learn the rulings of fasting so you can fast correctly.
Completing pending tasks: Try to finish any commitments that might distract you from worship during Ramadan.
Fasting some days of Sha’ban: Practicing fasting before Ramadan trains the soul for worship.
Reading the Noble Quran: Begin pondering and reading to make the Quran your companion during the month.
How to Prepare for Fasting Before Ramadan for Better Consistency
Start by training your body to reduce heavy meals, and gradually cut back on stimulants and sugars so you don’t tire in the first days of fasting. Try fasting some days before Ramadan, such as Mondays and Thursdays, to accustom your body and soul to the new routine.
Reduce time-wasting habits, and replace them with reading, remembrance, or prayer.
Prepare your heart before your body, by renewing your intention, repenting, and setting clear goals for what you want to achieve in Ramadan.
Learn to balance worship and daily life.
How to Balance Worship and Daily Life in Ramadan
To benefit from Ramadan, plan your day precisely and prioritize between worship and work. Create a daily schedule that includes sleep, iftar and suhoor, prayer, and allocate time for reading or learning new skills.
Pay attention to adequate sleep and hydration, and consume balanced meals to avoid lethargy. Time management helps you balance worship and daily activities, making Ramadan an opportunity for spiritual serenity and practical productivity.
What Are the Best Deeds to Begin Before Ramadan?
Among the best deeds is to thank Allah for the blessing of this blessed month. It was narrated from the Prophet ﷺ: “There has come to you the month of Ramadan, a blessed month. Allah has made fasting during it obligatory upon you. During it, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed, and the devils are chained. In it there is a night better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its goodness is truly deprived.” This reminds us of the greatness of the month and the opportunity to draw closer to Allah.
“O you who have believed, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183)
