The First Martyr in Islam

Is it not one of the most remarkable coincidences in the history of Islam that the first person to enter Islam was a woman, and the first person to be martyred in the path of Allah was also a woman?
Yes, this is what happened. The first of Allah’s creation to embrace Islam at the call of the Prophet ﷺ was Khadijah bint Khuwaylid رضي الله عنها, the Mother of the Believers. And the first to be honored with martyrdom in Muslim history was also a woman — the noble companion Sumayyah bint Khayyat, mother of Ammar ibn Yasir رضي الله عنهما.
A Beautiful Beginning to an Eternal Story
The story of Sumayyah رضي الله عنها is captivating and deeply moving. It is as impactful as it is inspiring. Her life began with what seemed like a small test concerning her personal circumstances, but it ended with tremendous success — she is among the list of martyrs who are alive with their Lord, receiving provision, rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them from His favor.
“And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.”

The Family of Yasir Embraces Islam
The journey to fame for the family of Yasir began when Allah sent His Messenger with Islam. Ammar ibn Yasir embraced Islam and returned to his parents, his feet racing faster than the wind, wanting to take them by the hand to the paradise of this world that would bear fruit for them in the paradise of the Hereafter.
As soon as Ammar saw them, he presented Islam to them and recited the Quran to them. And behold! Those pure and clean hearts opened up and rejoiced upon hearing the Word of Allah. Yasir and Sumayyah رضي الله عنهما felt the light illuminating the corners of the universe around them.
In a single moment, each of them said: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” With that declaration, three firm pillars were raised for Islam. History opened a brilliant page to record the patience of this family who had a position of truthfulness in Islam, while the religion was still fresh and new.
The Road to Paradise: Paved with Torture
The blessed family set out on their journey to the Paradise of the Most Merciful. Although the road was difficult, arduous, and long, its outcome was praiseworthy and precious. It is enough for a believer to place their feet on the beginning of the path and seek help from Allah to reap the fruits of faith in this world and the Hereafter.
It was only a matter of hours before news of their Islam reached Banu Makhzum — their allies in the days of ignorance. They became furious and poured upon the family of Yasir the most severe torture.
Yet despite all this, the call to Islam continued on its path. Every person who still possessed remnants of the natural disposition (fitrah) that Allah created in humanity embraced it. This only made the polytheists intensify their torture of those who believed in Allah and His Messenger and rejected false gods and tyrants.
This was the situation of everyone who openly declared Islam in Makkah, though the degrees of torture varied among them. But they had no choice except to be patient and to consider it all in the account with Allah, for they knew with certainty that the merchandise of Allah is precious, and that one must sacrifice one’s very soul and everything valuable to win Paradise and earn the pleasure of the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
Sumayyah: Pioneer of Patient Women
Sumayyah bint Khayyat رضي الله عنها was the pioneer of patient and steadfast women at the dawn of light. No woman is known in the history of women who endured patience like Sumayyah. She made patience her motto. And without doubt, the patient ones will be given their reward without measure.
Imagine a woman whose bones had grown weak and who had reached old age, enduring the torture of people whose hearts were harder than stone — indeed, even some stones have water gushing forth from them. She bore various types of harassment and terror because of her faith in Allah, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy.
The polytheists continued to torture Sumayyah, her husband Yasir, and their son Ammar. Whips tore apart their bodies. Yet her firm faith in Allah remained like immovable mountains, unaffected by waves or winds. These patient believers let the hopes of their oppressors be scattered by the wind, causing the leaders of the polytheists to be astounded by the patience of this family.
This family came to record against the polytheists the evil of their deeds, and to record for themselves beautiful, praiseworthy patience at the forefront of history.
The Prophet’s Promise
Then the beloved Muhammad ﷺ passed by them and said:
“Patience, O family of Yasir! For indeed, your appointment is Paradise.”
The winds of Paradise blew upon their hearts and extinguished the fire of torture in the blink of an eye. Here, their souls began to feel comfort and tranquility. Instead of the suffering they had been experiencing from the effects of torture, they began to find the torture sweet in the path of Allah. They dreamed of Paradise night and day.
The Final Torture: The Ultimate Sacrifice
As for the heroine of martyrs, Sumayyah, she was given over to Abu Jahl, the wicked one. She was handed to him by his uncle, Abu Hudhayfah ibn al-Mughirah. She was an elderly woman, as we mentioned, but she endured what even the strongest men could not endure.
Abu Jahl — may Allah disgrace him — began to unleash his hatred through torturing her, hoping she would apostatize from her religion. But how could he achieve that? Sumayyah resorted to silence. She did not answer him with a single word. She bore the torture with determination and strength. She elevated herself through her faith above Abu Jahl and those with him. She considered the bitterness of torture and tribulation in the path of Allah as insignificant.
When the wicked one despaired of her steadfastness, and her patience provoked him, he stabbed her with a spear in her private area, and she died as a martyr. She was content to surrender her soul to her Creator for His sake and in His path, willingly and by choice.
Here, the trial of the family of Yasir transformed into a divine blessing. The martyrdom of Sumayyah رضي الله عنها occurred in the late sixth year or early seventh year after the Prophet’s mission. She was the first martyr in Islam.
The Legacy of Sumayyah
- Faith Above All: Sumayyah chose Allah over comfort, truth over safety, Paradise over the temporary relief of denying her faith. She showed that true belief means standing firm no matter the cost.
- The Power of Women in Islam: Islam honored women from its very first days. The first believer was a woman (Khadijah), and the first martyr was a woman (Sumayyah). This is no coincidence — it is a testament to women’s crucial role in Islam.
- Patience Beyond Human Limits: An elderly woman, physically weak, endured torture that would break the strongest of men. Her secret? Unshakeable faith in Allah and the promise of Paradise.
- The Value of Conviction: Sumayyah could have saved herself with a single word of denial. But she knew that temporary relief is not worth eternal regret. She chose the Hereafter over this fleeting world.
- Eternal Life Begins with Sacrifice: She is not dead. The Quran tells us the martyrs are alive with their Lord. For over 1,400 years, Sumayyah has been in Paradise, receiving provisions, while those who tortured her have long since faced their punishment.
“And you will remember what I say to you. And I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Seeing of His servants.”
— Surah Ghafir (40:44)
Sumayyah entrusted her affair to Allah, and He honored her beyond measure. She refused to bow her head except to the One who created her. And for that unwavering devotion, she earned a station that will never fade: the first martyr in Islam, alive forever in Paradise.
أيكون من المصادفات الرائعة في تاريخ الإسلام، أن يكون أول من دخل الإسلام امرأة، وأول من استشهد في سبيل الله امرأة؟
نعم هذا ما كان، فأول خلق الله إسلامًا بدعوة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أم المؤمنين خديجة بنت خويلد رضي الله عنها، وأول من حظي بالشهادة في تاريخ المسلمين امرأة هي الصحابية الجليلة سمية بنت خياط -أم عمار بن ياسر رضي الله عنهما-.
بداية جميلة لقصة خالدة
والكلام عن سمية عليها سحائب الرحمة والرضوان ممتع آسر، وهو مؤثر بقدر ما هو شائق، فقد ابتدأت حياتها بامتحانٍ صغيرٍ فيما يخصها، ولكنه انتهى بنجاح كبير، فهي في قائمة الشهداء الذين هم أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون فرحين بما آتاهم الله من فضله.
“ولا تحسبن الذين قتلوا في سبيل الله أمواتًا بل أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون”
— سورة آل عمران (٣:١٦٩)
الأسرة الياسرية تُسلم لله
ابتدأت رحلة الشهرة مع الأسرة الياسرية عندما أرسل الله رسوله بالإسلام، فأسلم عمار بن ياسر، وعاد إلى أبويه، وأقدامه تسابق الريح يريد أن يأخذ بأيديهما إلى جنة الدنيا التي ستثمر لهم النعيم في جنة الآخرة.
وما إن رآهما عمار حتى عرض عليهما الإسلام وقرأ عليهما القرآن، وإذا بتلك القلوب النقية الطاهرة تنفتح وتبتهج بسماع كلام الله، وإذا بياسر وسمية رضي الله عنهما يشعران بالنور وهو يضيء أرجاء الكون من حولهما.
فيقول كل واحد منهما في لحظة واحدة: “أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا رسول الله”، بذلك ارتفعت ثلاث دعائم متينة للإسلام، وهب التاريخ يفتح صفحة ناصعة ليسجل صبر هذه الأسرة التي لها قدم صدق في الإسلام، والدين ما يزال غضًا نديًا.
الطريق إلى الجنة: معبَّد بالعذاب
انطلقت الأسرة الكريمة المباركة في رحلتها إلى جنة الرحمن، وعلى الرغم من أن الطريق صعب وشاق وطويل لكن عاقبته محمودة وغالية، ويكفي أن يضع المؤمن قدميه على أول الطريق، ويستعين بالله سبحانه وتعالى حتى يجني ثمار الإيمان في الدنيا والآخرة.
وما هي إلا ساعات معدودة حتى طار خبر إسلامهم إلى بني مخزوم -حلفائهم في الجاهلية- فاستشاطوا غضبًا وصبوا على آل ياسر أشد العذاب.
ومع ذلك مضت الدعوة في طريقها، وسط هذا الجحود والعناد، يقبل عليها كل من كانت له بقية من الفطرة التي فطر الله الناس عليها، وهو الأمر الذي جعل المشركين يشتدون في تعذيب من آمن منهم بالله وبرسوله وكفر بالجبت والطاغوت.
وكان هذا شأن كل من أظهر إسلامه بمكة، ولكن درجات العذاب كانت تتفاوت فيما بينهم، فما كان منهم إلا أن صبروا واحتسبوا ذلك كله عند الله، لأنهم يعلمون يقينًا أن سلعة الله غالية، وأنه لا بد من بذل النفس والنفيس من أجل الفوز بالجنان وبرضوان الرحيم الرحمان.
سمية: رائدة الصابرات
كانت سمية بنت خياط رضي الله عنها رائدة الصابرات الصامدات في مطلع النور، ولا يعرف في تاريخ النساء امرأة صبرت كسمية فقد جعلت رضي الله عنها الصبر شعارًا لها، ولا ريب أن الصابرين يوفون أجرهم بغير حساب.
وللإنسان أن يتصور امرأة وهن العظم منها، وبلغت من الكبر عتيًا، تتحمل عذاب أصحاب القلوب القاسية قسوة الحجارة، بل إن من الحجارة لما يتفجر منه الماء، وتتحمل أنواع العنت والإرهاب بسبب إيمانها بالله العزيز الحميد.
فقد ظل المشركون يعذبون سمية وزوجها ياسر وابنها عمار ومزقت السياط أجسامهما، إلا أن إيمانها الوثيق بالله بات كالجبال الراسيات لا تؤثر فيه الأمواج ولا الرياح، وترك هؤلاء الصابرون أحلام المتحاملين تذروها الرياح، وتجعل كبار المشركين يبهتون من صبر هذه الأسرة.
التي جاءت لتسجل عليهم سوء أعمالهم، وتسجل لنفسها صبرًا جميلاً محمودًا في غرة التاريخ.
بشارة النبي ﷺ
فإذا بالحبيب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم يمر عليهم، ويقول لهم:
“صبرًا آل ياسر فإن موعدكم الجنة”
لقد هبت رياح الجنة على قلوبهم فأطفأت نار العذاب في غمضة عين. وهنا بدأت نفوسهم تشعر بالراحة والطمأنينة، وبدلاً من المعاناة التي كانوا يجدونها من أثر التعذيب، أصبحوا يستعذبون العذاب في سبيل الله، ويحلمون بالجنة ليلاً ونهارًا.
العذاب الأخير: التضحية الكبرى
أما بطلة الشهداء سمية فقد أعطيت لأبي جهل الفاسق، أعطاها له عمه أبو حذيفة بن المغيرة، وكانت عجوز كبيرة كما ذكرنا، ولكنها تحملت ما لا يتحمله الأشداء.
وأخذ أبو جهل أخزاه الله يفرغ حقده في تعذيبها رجاءً أن تفتن في دينها، ولكن أني له ذلك، فقد ركنت سمية إلى الصمت، ولم تجبه بحرفٍ واحدٍ، وتحملت العذاب بإصرار واستكبار، واستعلت بعقيدتها على أبي جهل ومن معه، واستخفت بمر العذاب والبلاء في سبيل الله.
ولما يئس الفاسق من ثباتها وأثاره صبرها، طعنها بحربة في موطن عفتها فماتت شهيدة، ورضيت بذلك أن تسلم روحها لخالقها من أجله، وفي سبيله طائعة مختارة.
هنا تتحول المحنة الياسرية إلى منحة ربانية، وكان استشهاد سمية رضي الله عنها في أواخر السنة السادسة أو أوائل السنة السابعة من البعثة، وكانت أول شهيدة في الإسلام.
إرث سمية الخالد
- الإيمان فوق كل شيء: اختارت سمية الله على الراحة، والحق على السلامة، والجنة على الراحة المؤقتة من إنكار إيمانها. أظهرت أن الإيمان الحقيقي يعني الثبات مهما كان الثمن.
- قوة المرأة في الإسلام: كرّم الإسلام المرأة من أيامه الأولى. أول من آمن امرأة (خديجة)، وأول شهيدة امرأة (سمية). هذا ليس مصادفة – إنه شهادة على الدور الحاسم للمرأة في الإسلام.
- صبر يفوق الحدود البشرية: امرأة مسنة، ضعيفة جسديًا، تحملت عذابًا يكسر أقوى الرجال. سرها؟ إيمان لا يتزعزع بالله ووعد الجنة.
- قيمة اليقين: كان بإمكان سمية أن تنقذ نفسها بكلمة إنكار واحدة. لكنها علمت أن الراحة المؤقتة لا تستحق الندم الأبدي. اختارت الآخرة على هذه الدنيا الفانية.
- الحياة الأبدية تبدأ بالتضحية: هي ليست ميتة. القرآن يخبرنا أن الشهداء أحياء عند ربهم. لأكثر من ١٤٠٠ سنة، سمية في الجنة، تُرزق، بينما من عذبوها قد واجهوا عقابهم منذ زمن بعيد.
“فستذكرون ما أقول لكم وأفوض أمري إلى الله إن الله بصير بالعباد”
— سورة غافر (٤٠:٤٤)
فوضت سمية أمرها إلى الله، فأكرمها فوق كل تصور. رفضت أن تحني رأسها إلا لمن خلقها. وبسبب ذلك الإخلاص الذي لا يتزعزع، نالت مقامًا لن يزول أبدًا: أول شهيدة في الإسلام، حية إلى الأبد في الجنة.
