Why Are We Surprised?

Sometimes in the name of religion, sometimes in the name of homeland, and other times in the name of governance or interests….

But the truth is that a sound mind and pure nature cannot be deceived, no matter how the justifications change.

How could a man like Abu Lu’lu’ah al-Majusi, after being rescued by Muslims from Roman captivity and honored as a guest in Madinah, extend his hand to strike Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) while he stood praying Fajr in the Prophet’s Mosque… And the people were amazed.

And how was Ibn Saba able to convince some Muslims that Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) was unjust, until they rebelled against him while he was reciting the Quran… And the people were amazed…

And how could a man known for his worship and Quranic knowledge, like Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam, be convinced to harm Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was praying… And the people were amazed…

And how could a servant who lived in the house of Al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw nothing but goodness from him, mistreat him after all the kindness he received…. And the people were amazed.

And how could some people in Yazid’s army harm Al-Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), while they thought they were doing the right thing…. And the people were amazed…

The examples are many, and the methods of persuasion are varied.

Sometimes in the name of religion, sometimes in the name of homeland, and other times in the name of governance or interests….

But the truth is that a sound mind and pure nature cannot be deceived, no matter how the justifications change.

What was truth will remain truth, and what was falsehood will not be changed by justification or assumption.

✦ ✦ ✦

And Umar, Uthman, Ali, Al-Hasan, and Al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them all) will remain…

Symbols of justice and faith.

Their history is bright in this world, and their status is great in the Hereafter.

“And We shall set up scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be dealt with unjustly in anything.”

— Surah Al-Anbiya (21:47)

And the lesson is that when a person is questioned on the Day of Judgment, excuses will not benefit them.

For the true criterion is what is in the heart: sincerity, justice, and good intention.

May Allah grant us sincerity in speech and justice in action

And Allah knows best
