What a teacher he was, and what a man! He was filled with greatness, honesty, and sublimity! Truly, those overwhelmed by his greatness have their excuse, and those who sacrificed their lives for his sake are the most triumphant.
Muhammad ibn Abd Allah was Allah’s Messenger to people in the midsummer of life. What secret was granted to him that made him a man to be honored among human beings? And what noble hands did he raise toward heaven so that all the gates of mercy, blessing, and guidance opened wide? What faith, what chastity, what purity. What modesty, what love, what loyalty. What devotion to truth and what reverence for life and the living.
Allah bestowed upon him such blessings as to qualify him to carry His standard, speak on His behalf, and be the last of His messengers. Therefore, Allah’s bounty toward him was immense. However many minds, inspirations, and pens compete to speak about him or sing praises of his greatness, they all fall short before his superior traits.
If the introductory pages of this book begin with words about the Messenger (PBUH), they cannot hope to give him his full due of praise, nor can they claim truly to introduce the great Messenger to the readers. They are only a brief reference to his eminence and to some of his superior qualities that make people cherish him and that drew unprecedented loyalty to him from some of the figures mentioned in this book, whether they were Muhajirun, Ansar, or from Quraysh.
No sooner had life unfolded than Allah made all its breezes hail his coming and sent messengers to people everywhere, carrying the principles of the divine call and the fragrance of the caller, the truth of the teachings, the eminence of the master, the light of the message, and the compassion of the Messenger (PBUH).
That is true. This was the main objective, no more: to perceive, in the light of one of his rays, some of the traits of his rare eminence that brought about the believers’ loyalty and made them see in him both the goal and the way, the teacher and the friend.
